One of the most peaceful and rewarding activities while vacationing on Pensacola Beach is hunting for seashells. Whether you’re an avid collector or just looking for a fun family activity, walking along the shoreline and discovering hidden treasures can be a magical experience. With miles of pristine, sandy shores and the gentle sounds of the Gulf, seashell hunting is an activity that will make your beach vacation unforgettable.
In this guide, I’ll share valuable tips about seashell hunting on Pensacola Beach—from the best times to search for shells to what types of shells you might find.

Best Time to Hunt for Seashells
When it comes to seashell hunting, timing is everything. Here’s when to hit the beach for the best chance of finding beautiful shells:
- Early Morning: This is the best time to find shells before the beach gets crowded. The early bird gets the seashell!
- Low Tide: Low tide reveals a larger area of the beach and can uncover more shells. Check the tide charts before you go.
- After a Storm: If a storm has passed, head to the beach! The strong currents and waves often bring shells ashore, providing an excellent opportunity to find rarer and more unique shells.

Best Spots on Pensacola Beach
While you can find seashells all along Pensacola Beach, some spots are better than others for shell hunting:
- Opal Beach: Located within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Opal Beach is a quieter spot where you can find undisturbed stretches of sand, perfect for shell hunting. It’s less crowded, giving you a better chance to find beautiful and unique shells.
- Fort Pickens: Another gem within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the beaches around Fort Pickens are ideal for a quiet morning or afternoon hunt. The calm, shallow waters and expansive beaches make it a great place for families to explore and find hidden treasures.
- Langdon Beach: While this beach is great for a day in the sun, it’s also a solid spot for shelling, especially if you venture out early in the morning.
- The Point: The area near the Pensacola Pass (referred to as The Point) is another top spot for shells. Here, you might even find larger shells that have been swept in by the tides.

What Types of Shells Can You Find?
Pensacola Beach is home to a wide variety of shells, so you never know what you might stumble upon. Here are some common types of shells you can find:
- Conch Shells: While conch shells are rare, they’re always a prized find. Their spiral shape and size make them stand out among the smaller shells.
- Scallop Shells: These fan-shaped beauties come in a variety of colors and sizes, making them a favorite for collectors.
- Olive Shells: These smooth, elongated shells are often found rolling in the surf.
- Sand Dollars: A favorite for kids, sand dollars are delicate, flat disks that can be found nestled in the sand. Be sure not to take live ones, though—only pick up the white, dead sand dollars that have washed ashore.
- Auger Shells: Their tightly coiled, pointed shape makes these shells easily recognizable. They can be found in a variety of sizes along the beach.

Seashell Hunting Tips
Here are a few tips to make the most of your shelling experience:
- Bring a Mesh Bag or Bucket: A mesh bag allows sand and water to escape, making it easier to clean your shells later. A bucket is also useful for larger finds.
- Look in the Tidal Pools: Tidal pools are great spots to search for shells because they often trap shells that get missed in the open water.
- Respect the Wildlife: If you find a shell with a living creature inside (like a hermit crab or mollusk), leave it where it is. It’s part of the ecosystem!
- Walk Slowly and Scan: Shell hunting is all about patience. Take your time, and walk slowly along the waterline, scanning for shells just beneath the surface.
- Rinse Your Shells: After you’ve collected your shells, be sure to rinse them in freshwater to remove any sand or debris. Some shells may need a little cleaning to reveal their true beauty!
Bonus Tip: Some people use rakes or scoops to help them sift through the sand or catch shells rolling in the surf. I’ve used a sand flea rake and a bait net but two of my favorite items for scooping seashells are the Rake and Scoop and a Kitty Litter Scoop.

Make It a Family Adventure
Seashell hunting is an activity the whole family can enjoy together. Kids will love the thrill of finding a shiny new shell, and it’s a great way to keep little ones entertained for hours. You can even make it into a game by seeing who can find the most colorful or unique shell!
Pensacola Beach’s natural beauty and abundance of shells make it the perfect place to explore and create lasting family memories. So next time you’re on the shore, take a walk with your family, enjoy the peaceful sounds of the Gulf, and hunt for those beautiful seashells that will remind you of your perfect beach day.
