What To Wear for Family Photos | Jennifer Beal Photography
One of my most asked questions is what to wear for family photos. Selecting outfits doesn’t have to be difficult if you keep these tips in mind.
Begin by thinking about the colors in your house. If you are planning to print photos to display you want your photos to coordinate with your decor. What colors do you like and what colors are you naturally drawn to? That’s a great place to start.
Then pick an outfit that you love on yourself. It should fit well and not bunch up or feel uncomfortable. That will translate into the photos if you feel good about the outfit. Then coordinate with everyone else once you are happy with your outfit. Watch out for short skirts and dresses. We usually do a few seated poses during the session and longer, flowy dresses or skirts work better for that. Another thing to watch for is bra straps that show in sleeveless outfits. You should also be comfortable with the neckline especially if it’s plunging.
One or two prints, plaids or florals (avoid logos) that you love are okay, but solids always look nice together.
A couple of coordinating colors with a khaki, white, or denim neutral works well.
Layers and accessories always make everything look pulled together. Think a pretty necklace or cute belt during warm weather and cardigans, scarves, blazers or vests during cool weather.
I provide access to a styling service for clients who book with me to help them with outfit selections. You can either purchase items directly through the site or use the inspiration to put together items that you already own.
