Guide to Family Photos – Jennifer Beal Photography

Capturing beautiful family moments through photography is a timeless tradition, but getting your little ones excited about it can sometimes be a challenge. It’s crucial to set the right tone and create an atmosphere of excitement rather than making the session feel like a chore. In this blog post, I’ll explore the importance of framing your family photoshoot as a special adventure and share tips on how to make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. Enjoy this guide to fun family photos!

The Power of Words

It’s not just about capturing images; it’s about creating memories. Parents take note: the way we communicate with our children before and during a photo shoot can significantly impact their perception of the experience. Avoid phrases that may inadvertently turn the session into a perceived chore or a favor for Mom and Dad. My goal is to capture authentic connection and natural smiles. I will direct them to look at me when needed.

Change the Narrative

Let’s shift the narrative from a tedious task to an exciting adventure. Instead of telling your children that the photoshoot will be over soon, say, “Tonight is a very special night! Our family gets to explore together. Let’s make some very special photos of our family.” To set the right tone, avoid over-preparing your kids. Skip the detailed explanations about the photoshoot and instead, frame it as a fun family day of exploration and play. Avoid coaching them to smile at the camera; authentic moments make for the best memories.

Conserve Energy

Keep the day of your photo shoot chill. Opt for a relaxed day leading up to your photoshoot. Save your little ones’ energy for the session, which often involves exploration and play. Ensure everyone is well-fed, and bring water and non-messy snacks just in case. Be strategic about snacks, though, using them as a last resort. Some good snack options include:

  • Fruit Snacks
  • Baby Puffs or Cheerios (dissolve quickly)
  • Mini Marshmallows

Allow Extra Time

Be Ready Early: Give yourself ample time to prepare, at least 30-60 minutes more than you think you need. A relaxed start sets the tone for a happy family session. I know I get short with my family when we are running late and that’s not a good vibe for a photo shoot.

Highlight the Fun

Children are naturally curious and adventurous. Tap into that energy by presenting the photoshoot as an exciting family adventure. Highlight the opportunity to create special memories together, exploring a beautiful location or capturing unique moments that will be treasured for years to come.

Involve Kids in the Process

Kids love to feel in control. Involve them in the process by letting them make choices. Whether it’s selecting their favorite pose or deciding which photo to send to grandma, empowering them with these small decisions can turn the photoshoot into a collaborative and enjoyable experience.
